Petty Officer 3rd Class Sanford Darlinton, machinists mate, left, assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Bataan, and Shawn Elequin, information systems technician, assigned to the guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf, face off during a chess tournament during Surface Line Week 2008. Surface Line Week is a weeklong series of competitive events, during which Hampton Roads area surface warriors show off their professional and athletic prowess. It is an opportunity to promote greater coordination and communication among surface warriors, to build esprit de corps and camaraderie and to recognize professional excellence across the force.
