    It's 'Checkers' In Hawijah, Iraq

A market area in Hawijah, Iraq, once known as the 'Anbar of the North', is bustling with shoppers and traffic during a recent visit. "A game of checkers, a crowd of shoppers, traffic, no body-armor, partnered with Khalaf Ibrahim Ali, not against him, this-is, success in Iraq," Lt. Col. Christopher Vanek, commander, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regt., said of the security gains enjoyed here. Ali, is a Hawijah Sons of Iraq contractor. Both Vanek and Ali enjoyed a game of checkers in the midst of a market place in downtown Hawijah, once referred to as the 'Anbar of the North', recently.
