Rct. Garrett Monast, Platoon 1066, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, inches over a small moat on a combat training course Aug. 23, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Monast, an 18-year-old native of Columbus, Ohio, focused on keeping his weapon and eyes oriented forward toward the enemy. Recruits polished their newly acquired basic combat training skills on the course and will continue to build on what they learned throughout their Marine Corps careers. Delta Company is scheduled to graduate Sept. 13, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. MaryAnn Hill)
