The Regimental Combat Team 6 Marine of the day is Staff Sgt. Ryan Pazcoguin, 29, LNO EKMS, from South San Francisco, Calif.

He has been in the Marine Corps for nine and a half years and is currently on his third combat deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Pazcoguin said he didn’t really know what the Marine Corps was until he was in college.

“I was sitting in class one day and a girl walked in wearing a shirt with the letters USMC,” he said while shaking his head. “Then I asked her what college that was. She got pretty mad and said ‘Are you kidding me?! These guys fight for your freedom everyday and you don’t know who the Marines are?’”

According to Pazcoguin, he joined the Marine Corps after seeing he didn’t really like the college life.

“I was procrastinating on a 12 page college paper I had to write that was due the next day,” he said while laughing. “I had strategically placed my TV next to the computer so I could get distracted from time to time. Then I thought to myself, ‘I can’t do this anymore! I need something else.’ A few seconds later a Marine Corps commercial came on and I went to the recruiting office the next day.”

During his first two deployments he was with Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines, 12th Marine Regiment. His previous units include 5th Marines, 12th Marines then a tour as a Marine Security Guard in Munich, Germany, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Tokyo Japan.

“I was in Tokyo during the earthquake,” he added. “I think Saudi Arabia was my favorite time while on MSG.”

He says he very much enjoys his current military occupational specialty of 0629, radio chief, but wants to go back to MSG.

“I want to make a career out of knowing East Asia,” he said. “I want to go anywhere as long as I haven’t been there before. And besides, who doesn’t like wearing a suit?”

Pazcoguin says he also enjoys learning new languages. He currently speaks Korean, Tagalog, and also took Japanese in college. “I picked up a little German in Munich too,” he added.

NERD FACT: Pazcoguin loves to listen to Korean pop music. “I desperately follow it,” he said as he pulled out a CD from his bag. “It’s just so catchy.”
