The Regimental Combat Team 6 Marine of the day is Lance Cpl. Spencer Johnson, 20, utility MIMMS clerk, from Portland, Ore.

Johnson has been in the Marine Corps for a year and a half and is currently on his first deployment.

“It’s a family tradition, everyone is in the military,” he said. “My older brother was in the Navy and my dad did 20 years in the Navy. I joined the Marine Corps to one up them.”

His father was a master at arms in the Navy and his brother was a submarine radio technician.

“I knew I wanted to join the Marines in the beginning of my senior year of high school,” he said. “Everyone else already had plans to college and had been accepted to different colleges. I just knew I wanted to be a Marine.”

His hobbies include reading books, he enjoys almost anything by Tom Clancy, working on cars and listening to music.

“I love taking (cars) apart and then building them back,” he said. “It gets my mind off things and its real hands on.”

Before joining the Marine Corps, Johnson worked at a salvage yard where he also took cars apart. His current military occupational specialty is 1341, heavy equipment mechanic.

“It’s a good MOS,” he said. “I get a lot of cross training into other jobs. I like working on the generators. My favorite part is troubleshooting the machines and then fixing them.”

Though he has only been in the Marine Corps for less than two years, he says he has really enjoyed his time serving. One of the goals he has set for himself while in the Marine Corps is to get promoted to corporal before the end of his current deployment.
Johnson says he wants to make a career out of the Marine Corps and stay in for 20 years. “I like the camaraderie in the Marines, and I like the steady paycheck too,” he said with a smile.

“I’d like to say hi to my family in Oregon and in California,” he said. “I love you guys.”

NERD FACT: Johnson has read all of the Harry Potter books. “When I first started reading the books, the characters were about my age,” he said. “I just really liked the books.”
