Hueco Tanks State Park: A journey into the past

    FORT BLISS, TX, UNITED STATES

    16th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

This rock painting of a deer is painted on a small section of South Mountain at Hueco Tanks State Park. Once a paradise filled with plants and animals, the area sustained generations of the Jornada Mogollon Native Americans. A thousand years ago, the area had a climate much like modern day Maryland. Thirty miles outside El Paso, Texas, this plant and animal sanctuary lies in an otherwise inhospitable, arid desert. For more information, visit www.texasbeyondhistory.net/hueco/.
