Rct. Samuel Joyner, Platoon 1025, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, prepares to break the hold of Rct. Alex Avakyan, Platoon 1026, during martial arts practices Feb. 26, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. The recruits partnered up at the beginning of class and rehearsed techniques on each other. The martial arts skills they learn in boot camp are some they may need if they become Marines. The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program fuses hand-to-hand combat skills with character development, yielding a strong, morally sound Marine warrior.
