First Sgt. John Novothy (center), the senior enlisted noncommissioned officer of D Troop, 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, talks with retired paratroopers John Shelander (right) and Jerry Moser during National Airborne Day celebrations at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, Aug 24. Shelander was with the 82nd Signal Battalion in 1959. He has attended celebrations at the museum since they started in 2002. National Airborne Day celebrates the first U.S. Army parachute jump Aug. 16, 1940. This is the 11th observance of the day President George W. Bush proclaimed Aug. 16, 2002, the day to nationally recognize that first jump. It was also an opportunity for family members to gain an understanding of what their paratroopers do and where their traditions began.
