The U.S. Army transport General Royal T. Frank memorial ceremony was held by the 1st Squadron, 299th Cavalry Regiment, Hawaiʻi Army National Guard which honored Guardsmen lost during World War II in Hilo, Hawaiʻi, on Jan. 28 2026. USAT Royal T. Frank was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Alenuihāhā Channel while carrying Hawaiʻi Guardsmen returning home from training on Jan. 28, 1942. Seventeen Soldiers lost their lives in the sinking, while nine survived.
