U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Katie Govoni, civil affairs team sergeant, and with Civil Affairs Team 4334, 443rd Civil Affairs Battalion discuss the importance of the civil affairs profession in Atašiene, Latvia June 5, 2025. Civil affairs consists of small team units who work with key political leaders within the civilian population, to meet with schools, engage with local communities while bringing those observations to U.S. military leaders when advising them with how the civilians see the U.S. within that particular area. Doing so facilitates stronger partnership and enhances relationships at the local level. V Corps, the U.S. Army’s only forward-deployed corps in Europe, participates in more than 50 exercises, symposiums, and leadership summits each year with Allied and partner nations to build capability and capacity along NATO’s eastern flank.
