B-roll from the restoration and completed efforts of Arlington National Cemetery's Ord and Weitzel Gate, which is located on the northeastern boundary of the cemetery.
This is the result of a complex, multi-year restoration process. The historical gate was designed and built in 1879 under the leadership of Maj. Gen. Montgomery Meigs. Two columns from the War Department Building in Washington, D.C., which was built in 1820 and demolished in 1879, were used to build the gate. The original gate featured elaborate ironwork and connected to the north boundary wall of the cemetery. The gate was disassembled in 1979 and stored on the cemetery grounds due to the cemetery's expansion and advent of modern vehicles, many of which were wider than the gate's original clearance.
The complex restoration process involved salvaging and repairing the gate's columns along with its decorative urns. The newly restored gate will offer pedestrian entrance to the cemetery from its north side.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the reopening of the gate will be held at 11:30am on November 8, 2022. The gate will be available for use by the public immediately afterward.
