On May 2, 2019, a routine medical device decommissioning almost turned into a devastating event for Seattle and its surrounding areas. During the incident, cesium-137 was accidentally breached. The quick reaction of the 10th Civil Support Team, Washington State Department of Health, Seattle Fire Department, Radiological Assistance Program Region 8, and other agencies throughout the state, allowed the situation to be contained and de-escalated. Since the incident, 10th CST and agencies throughout the state continue to train together for situations like this to ensure the health and safety of our community.
