NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (Oct. 6, 2021) Lt. Lindsay Riddick, reactor divisional officer aboard the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), talks about her grandfather Michael Adams, a Vietnam War veteran, earning two Purple Heart medals in Vietnam during USS George Washington’s Purple Heart week. USS George Washington is undergoing refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipyard. RCOH is a nearly four-year project performed only once during a carrier’s 50-year service life that includes refueling the ship’s two nuclear reactors, as well as significant repairs, upgrades and modernization.
