Lieutenant General David McKiernan, outgoing Commanding General, Third US Army/ARCENT/CFLCC, speaks to audience at the Third US Army change of command ceremony at Fort McPherson, Georgia. He acknowledges Third Army/ARCENT/CFLCC members at the ceremony, the troops and band on the field, and General Abizaid and General McNeill. Says troops present represent a great Army and team, executing tough and dangerous mission in Central Command. Says they are a team in a war nobody could foresee, with victory hard to define, but the most important event of our lifetimes. Recognizes the dead and wounded of war and that a courageous, committed, competent military won't fail. Says he's extremely proud to have led Third Army/ARCENT/CFLCC through the joint land campaign to rid Iraq of Saddam Hussein, the largest rotation of ground forces since WWII, and the implementation of a theater-wide administrative control headquarters. Says he was blessed with a team of the very best people; Islamic friends want terrorism gone and the headquarters will continue to fight; today is a change in leadership, not mission. Says LTC Whitcomb will move the formation forward to new accomplishments while taking care of people. Says he's humble and proud to continue service to Army and country, thanks family, and ends with a story about a wounded Soldiers who expressed his desire to return to his unit.
