For 50 years, the Minuteman III weapon system has served as the bedrock of strategic stability with a flight of 10 placed on alert Aug. 19, 1970 at Minot Air Force Base, N.D. Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles are combat capable, 24/7/365, providing a second strike capability and the ability to be launched even when under attack. The Minuteman III has served uninterrupted for 50 years, having undergone a series of life extension programs to maintain viability.
