U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. 6th Fleet exercises command and control over the U.S. Navy's contribution to NATO ballistic missile defense: the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System in Romania and Poland and four Arleigh Burke-class destroyers forward-deployed to Rota, Spain. Exercise Formidable Shield in October 2017 successfully demonstrated NATO’s smart defense concept with air defense ships protecting BMD ships in an integrated air and missile defense environment. The NATO BMD umbrella is designed to defend against the growing threat posed by the proliferation of ballistic missiles.
