Lt. Col. Brian Koyn, the 82nd Airborne Division chaplain, speaks at the Capt. Ignatius Maternowski Ceremony in Gueutteville, France June 8, 2019. Maternowski was a Franciscan Friar with the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. After jumping in near Picauville during D-Day, Maternowski set up a makeshift aid station in Gueutteville between the Germans and Americans. Taking off his helmet and carrying a white flag to a German aid station to look for A doctor, Maternowski made an agreement with the Germans to combine aid stations to support the care of Soldiers on both sides. During a return trip to the American aid station, Maternowski was shot and killed by a German sniper.
