National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month celebrates the Asian and Pacific Islander Americans of the past and present. The month was established to be celebrated in May to commemorate the first Japanese immigrants to arrive in America on May 7, 1843, as well as to honor the Chinese Americans that helped complete the transcontinental railroad.
