On the morning of December 7, 1941, Imperial Japanese war planes attacked the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. On the day of the attack, Melvin Kealoha Bell, a Coast Guard radioman who was assigned at the Diamond Head Lighthouse in Oahu, was one of the first to transmit radio messages warning commercial vessels and military installations of the attack through Morse Code. Master Chief Petty Officer Bell passed away at the age of 98 on September 9, 2018, and was laid to rest with full military honors at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
