High performing health care organizations that deliver the safest and most effective care also uniformly endorse the principle respect for people as the foundation for improving health care delivery. These organizations create a just culture in which staff and patients are trusted, valued, and relied on to initiate improvements and innovations at the front lines.
To help put this and other High Reliability Guiding Principles into practice, the Military Health System assembled a set of evidence-based strategies called the Leadership Engagement Toolkit. One specific strategy built upon the principle of Respect for People is Improving Physician and Patient Communication at the Bedside. This strategy leverages the multi-disciplinary team as a way to improve communication.
We encourage you to consider how you can use this and other leadership engagement practices to facilitate respect for people and a culture of safety, moving your organization one step closer toward the goal of becoming a high reliability organization.
