B-Roll (No voice-over): Lt. Col. A. Valeniks, 3rd Brigade, Latvian Zemessarde (National Guard), 2nd Defense Region, hands-off command of the unit to young Lt. Col. E. Kopeika at a change of command ceremony held June 12, 2015, in Rezenke, Latvia. Valeniks led the unit, founded in 2003 and formalized in 2007, for the past five years. Members of the unit, including Kopeika, traveled to Michigan in 1997 to train with Michigan National Guard Soldiers at Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center. Kopeika would like to bring the unit back to Michigan for additional training or would welcome Michigan National Guard troops to the Zemessarde armory in Rezenke. Kopeika said the main mission of the unit is defense of their country. They train with the full time Latvian military whenever possible and, like U.S. National Guard, they also have a local mission to assist civil authorities (police, water works, energy), in times of emergency. Keeping the volunteer troops interested and trained is the biggest challenge Kopeika sees for the near future of the unit. Representatives from a Michigan National Guard infantry unit are planning to come to Rezenke next summer and the new Lt. Col wants his unit to be ready and fit for the new maneuvers the Michigan team will be training them on.
