On April 25, 1945, Soviet and American troops met at the River Elbe, near Torgau in Germany, marking an important step toward the end of the World War II in Europe. The Spirit of the Elbe marker and tree was dedicated at Arlington National Cemetery in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the "Link-Up." Each year, Russia and the former Soviet Republics gather at the marker to observe this anniversary. This year, the Russian ambassador and representatives from 10 former Soviet Republics, along with local veterans of the "Link-Up," participated in the annual wreath laying ceremony. Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak said, "It is a special day because we get to say thank you to those who paid with their lives and to those who are still with us. I am so glad we have Russians, Americans and friends from other embassies here. We are all united on this particular day irrespective of differences we have on other issues because this is a day of remembrance for those who paid with their lives for something that is so important to all of us.”
