Operation Tomodachi: USS Essex Helicopter Take Off and Landings

U.S. Navy SH-60 Seahawk helicopter with the forward deployed amphibious assault ship U.S.S. Essex (LHD 2), lands and takes off aboard the flight deck of the Essex during flight operations. A U.S. Marine CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 262 (HMM-262), 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), lands aboard the flight deck of the Essex, and two CH-53 Super Stallion helicopters with HMM 262, take off during a humanitarian assistance/disaster relief mission in support of Operation Tomodachi. The 31st MEU's involvement is part of a larger U.S. government response, after a 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Japan causing wide spread damage.
