U.S. Marines with the Combat Cargo section aboard the hangar bay of the forward deployed amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), move pallets of supplies in preparation for humanitarian assistance/disaster relief mission in support of Operation Tomodachi. The 31st MEU's involvement is part of a larger U.S. government response, after a 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck Japan causing wide spread damage.
