First-person story on the importance of following all motorcycle safety protocols.
Transcript:
I'm Senior Airman Derek Ray, and I was in a motorcycle accident that changed my perspective on life. It was a warm, sunny day, Saturday morning, and I just going to play some football with some friends at the park, just a mile or two down the road. Threw on my riding gear, everything but a riding jacket - all I had on was a cut off shirt. Did my pre-checks and took off. When I hit the car, I happened to glance inside the driver's window, and the woman wasn't even looking at me. So when I hit, I felt a sharp pain in my left knee instantly, and I flew about ten or fifteen feet, landed on the left side of my body and just began to roll.
Learned a few lessons that day. First one being that I'm not invincible, like I thought I was - that 23 year old mindset is gone now. Second one was I was lucky - a foot to the left and I would've been inside the car. Riding gear really is there to protect you. If I had been wearing it, I doubt my scars would be nearly as bad as they are.
