The first of 12 giant gates for the new auxiliary spillway at Folsom Dam arrived in Sacramento, Calif., March 13, after a 600-mile journey from the Oregon Iron Works facility in Vancouver, Wash. Transported by a 100-foot-long flatbed truck and highway patrol escort, the gate traveled down Interstate-5 mostly at night to minimize disruption to traffic. During the next few months, the remaining gates and associated parts will be delivered in up to 31 more loads. Gate installation is expected to begin this summer, and the spillway is scheduled to be complete by October 2017.
