Army Reserve SPC Monica Melendez thinks the time is right to leave the Tampa Bay area with the U.S. Army Soldier Show, all the while knowing a deployment will follow. “I feel like I’m born here, I’m raised here – this is my country – and I feel like everybody should serve if they can,” said Melendez, 28, who has been pushed in the direction of the Soldier Show since she sang the national anthem at Basic Training. “It’s funny because everybody looks at me and is like, ‘She’s gonna squeak.’ But then I just come out with this loud voice, and they’re like, ‘Man, you should sing the national anthem for this, and sing it for that, and definitely do the Soldier Show. Don’t make me look you up and see you haven’t done it.’ From my drill sergeants to lieutenant colonels, anybody that’s heard me sing in the military in my leadership has told me to check it out. I had the opportunity to try this year, and so here I am. I’m ready to get down to business and do my part.”
