SSG Juan P. Correa, construction equipment repairer, Duty Station: Fort Wadsworth, N.Y. Hometown: Woodhaven, N.Y. Soldier Show Technician
SSG Juan Correa joined the Army National Guard with his best friend one year after graduating from high school to earn money for college. He began playing bass in high school. After completing Army basic training, Correa enrolled at Queensborough Community College with the intention of learning some phase of the music industry. After taking an introductory course in audio, he was hooked on sound. He earned his associate’s degree in 2006 with a double major in fine arts and music electronic technology. Correa then enrolled at Queens College, where he began work on a bachelor’s degree in music education while freelancing in sound engineering at various clubs, lounges and theatre productions around New York City’s Salsa scene. He also dabbled in lighting design and operations. Correa later earned his license as an emergency medical technician and worked as a dispatcher and logistics coordinator for Jamaica Hospital in Queens, N.Y. When he heard about the U.S. Army Soldier Show, he applied the next day. “I’m ecstatic about this opportunity to work with the audio production team,” Correa said. “I can’t wait to do some sound engineering.”
