Major General Peter Chiarelli, Commanding General of Multinational Forces in Iraq and 1st Cavalry Division says the late governor of Baghdad epitomized the pioneering spirit and sought to improve Baghdad; was a great friend and will not be forgotten. MG Chiarelli calls for insurgents to cease operations now. Says MNF will not be involved in the Iraq election process; will only assist with security matters as determined by Iraqi government. Only Iraqi forces will provide security, count ballots, operate polling stations, and announce results. Says troops from 1st Cav, 24th Marine Expeditionary Force and Iraqi National Force together form "Operation Triple Play", formed to disrupt insurgent activity. MG Chiarelli says the reconstruction of Baghdad is hardly covered in the media; says 18,000 people are working on the Sadr City sewage pipeline (photos of work included). MG Chiarelli takes questions from media assembled at the Pentagon: talks about receiving intelligence from Iraqi civilians via Joint Coordination Center, comprised of Iraqi police and National Guard; has had success in finding leaders, caches, and VBIEDs; (vehicle-born improvised explosive devices) expects more calls as election day approaches; no thought given on delaying election because of possible attacks. Says rocket and mortar attacks have decreased; IEDs down by 50 percent because insurgents are less trained and US forces are finding and detonating them. Despite insurgents targeting Iraqi forces, recruitment is up. (photos included)
