Eldridge Johnson Jr. received the Distinguished Flying Cross, for his heroic actions during the Vietnam war, on February 22, 2024 at Fort Campbell, KY. Eldridge Johnson Jr. was a CW2 maintenance test pilot for C Troop (Condors), 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) when his helicopter, an AH-1 Cobra, went down in a known Viet Cong village. CW2 Johnson radioed for help, sent his co-pilot back to base for supplies and secured the helicopter from enemy forces. Once re-supplied, CW2 Johnson was able to single-handedly repair the Cobra and fly it back to base.
