アルフレッド・スティーグリッツはドイツ系移民の子として、ニュージャージー州ホーボケンに生まれた。17歳でベルリンの工科学校ポリテクニックに留学し、写真化学を学び、同時に写真を撮り始める。24歳のときにロンドンの国際写真サロン展で一等賞を獲得し、スティーグリッツはその名を知られるようになった。
