This article provides a blueprint for Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs) to improve their Air Defense Artillery (ADA) planning and execution, drawing on lessons from the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC). The author argues that successful air defense hinges on overcoming common failures in communication, planning, and training. The paper details how communication breakdowns between the Brigade's ADAM/BAE cell and tactical Stinger teams lead to missed engagement opportunities. It also criticizes the frequent failure of Air Defense Officers (ADOs) to create and enforce a comprehensive defense design, often delegating asset placement to subordinate units who lack the proper focus. To remedy these issues, the article recommends creating robust communication plans that reach the lowest tactical levels, developing a comprehensive, visual air defense design, and implementing robust, home-station training and certification for Stinger teams.
