TALLIL, Iraq -- The 300th Area Support Group, 13th Corps Support Command and the 122nd Corps Support Group, 1st Corps Support Command conducted a transfer of authority ceremony Dec. 19 on the grounds of the Ziggurat of Ur.

Col. Pamela L. Adams, 300th ASG commander, relinquished authority to Col. Allen M. Harrell, 122nd CSG commander. Brig. Gen. Yves J. Fontaine, 1st COSCOM commander, was the reviewing officer for the ceremony and the guest speaker.

"Today we transfer authority between two great units in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. With that authority comes the responsibility to ensure that we never fail the mission to provide the force with whatever it needs to defeat terror and support the Iraqi people in their quest for liberty," Fontaine said.

The 300th ASG, a Reserve unit from Fort Lee, Va. was mobilized and deployed Dec. 15, 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During their tenure they provided direct support supply, transportation, and maintenance support to three U.S. divisions, a multi-national division, an armored cavalry division and a Marine expeditionary unit. "We worked jointly to work coalition missions on a highly collaborative manner," Adams said.

There were three goals that the 300th ASG aspired to accomplish in their support of these forces; to provide logistical support to U.S. and coalition forces in their area of operation, to provide self-protective security to organic convoys and civilian contractors, and provide base operations for three critical sites, said Adams.

Additionally, the 300th ASG took on humanitarian assistance missions.

Water purification, power generation, and communications were some of the many projects initiated in order to advance strategic initiatives in enhancing workforce development and economic growth with local contractors, leaders and the government.

"We created a civil military operations detachment for our area of operation in a consolidated effort to address humanitarian assistance missions," Adams said. Units and organizations involved consisted of the Air Force, Army, Corps of Engineers and the Italian Army Brigade, a coalition unit.

For succeeding in these accomplishments, the unit was awarded about 1,500 awards and decorations.

The 122nd CSG looks enthusiastic and has taken hold of the mission from the start, said Fontaine. "I have confidence that they will execute it with tenacity," he said.

"We are now part of the 1st COSCOM, the first team of logistics," said Harrell. "We have a huge task ahead of us. But, I know we are going to do well in the conduct of this mission," he said.

The 122nd CSG is a National Guard unit from Selma, Ala., that was mobilized and deployed Nov. 28, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

This ceremony is the last of the group level transfers of authorities to take place for the 1st COSCOM. Previous support groups that accepted authority from 13th COSCOM units were the 507th, 46th, 917th CSGs, and the Corp Distribution Command.
