EMPORIA, Va. — A humbled Maj. Gen. Larry D. Wyche spoke at Annual American Legion Post 151 and 46 Veterans’ Day ceremony Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. in Emporia, Va.
The crowd of people included many foreign war conflict veterans ranging from World War II to the most recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Also in attendance was the Greensville High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets.
"We are uniquely connected," explained Wyche. "Our uniforms have changed many times, but the determination and strength of men and women willing to serve this great nation has not changed."
The poised Wyche displayed true character during his speech, even when random disturbing noises such as a rumbling train passed by the observance less than 50 feet away.
“If that’s all we have to worry about we’re okay," said Wyche. The crowd laughed in agreement.
Wyche gave thanks to many people who played a part in his life. He specially thanked four-star retired Gen. Benjamin S. Griffin of Emporia, Va. Griffin was a respected mentor to Wyche throughout his military career.
Before ending his speech Wyche acknowledged the JROTC cadets who stood in formation behind the audience. They are our future soldiers, said Wyche.
Following the conclusion of the ceremony, Wyche happily greeted a long line of proud supporters. He expressed sincere thanks and appreciation to each person who waited to meet with him. He also made time to directly speak with the Greensville High School JROTC cadets before leaving.
The Emporia, Va., native Maj. Gen. Wyche is the commanding general of U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command and the Sustainment Center of Excellence at Fort Lee, Va.
