LOGAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Bryan Watson, director of Engineering, Joint Civil-Military Operations, United States Forces-Afghanistan and Afghan National Army Brig. Gen. M. Shafi Bahir, senior ANA engineer, met with soldiers of the 7th Engineer Battalion to evaluate the ANA development progress at Camp Miawon and Forward Operation Base Shank, Afghanistan June 25.

ANA soldiers at Camp Miawon received both generals with a warm greeting. Watson also greeted everyone with a friendly gesture by tapping each soldier on the shoulder.

“I wanted everyone to know that I can be approachable and they can express any concerns they may have, down to the youngest soldier.” said Watson. “Setting the tone early and greeting every soldier is important.”

Watson and Shafi were able to get a firsthand look at the training and development between the ANA soldiers from 4th Brigade, 203rd Corps Route Clearance Company and soldiers from Forward Support Company, 7th Engineer Battalion.

“We have been working with the 7th Engineer Battalion since last fall and I thank them for all the good training they have provided us” said ANA Lt. Col. Malekudin, 4th Brigade, 203rd Corps RCC commander.

“The generals not only observed the soldiers train but also addressed ongoing issues where the partnership could be improved”, said Lt. Col. Mark Quander, 7th Engineer Battalion commander.

They then proceeded to the motor pool where equipment was displayed. “I wanted to see what equipment has made it from depot and see if the equipment the RCC has received is fully mission capable” said Watson.

Watson and Shafi took time to recognize soldiers from both the U.S. Army and the ANA for their hard work and bravery.

“These are the soldiers that are making an impact on a daily basis and their hard work will help have a secure Afghanistan”, said Shafi.

The generals then met with Quander and Capt. Craig Genung, ANA Development Officer, HHC 7th Engineer Battalion to receive a brief on the overall ANA development program assigned to the 7th Engineer Battalion.

“I believe the brief went well,” said Genung. “I ensured the brief gave full spectrum engineer operations and visibility with the Engineer in 201st Corps and 203rd Corps.”

“I was impressed by the professional brief that was also translated in my honor,” said Shafi. “I learned a lot from the brief and I am very appreciative of the 7th Engineer Battalion for all the training they have given my soldiers.”
