FORWARD OPERATING BASE MASUM GHAR, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army soldiers of the 6th Kandak, 2nd Brigade, 205th Corps and U.S. soldiers of Taskforce 1st Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment conducted a 20 day operation in the Mizan district of Zabul province from late April to mid-May.
The leadership of the 6th KDK planned operation Quwee Gaw’e Nar, or ‘Strong Bull,’ with the purpose to neutralize insurgent forces throughout the Shey Khan Valley in order to set the conditions for governance and security in Mizan district.
The operation was divided into four phases. In the first phase, lasting five days, the 6th KDK, in partnership with TF 1-14 and Security Force Assistance Team, cleared villages and terrain identified by the Afghan National Army within the valleys of the west and south of the Mizan District in the Zabul province. The second phase, which was four days long, targeted the area between Combat Outpost Mizan and Forward Operating Base Massoud. The 3rd phase, which lasted until May 18, focused on the villages east of FOB Massoud. The final phase consisted of an air assault into the isolated Shay Khan Valley by the 6th KDK.
By the end of operation, three ANA soldiers were killed and six wounded; the Taliban suffered the same number of wounded as the ANA, but 32 insurgents were killed and 16 insurgents detained in the valleys of Mizan District. The joint force confiscated 12 motorcycles discovered 14 improvised explosive devices consisting of 568 kg of explosives, two large caches consisting of 19 RPG rounds, five 120mm mortar, a single 82mm mortar, an RPG launcher, a light machinegun, communications equipment and an assortment of small arms, ammunition and IED making materials. All of the explosives and munitions were blown in place by the ANA explosives ordinance disposal unit.
The operation will permit the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to have a presence in the Shey Khan Valley. The improved security provided by the Afghan National Security Forces will ensure that GIRoA officials will be able to offer effective governance throughout all of Mizan district.
