WASHINGTON - The 2012 Commander in Chief’s Annual Award for Installation Excellence was presented to Defense Logistics Agency Distribution San Joaquin, Calif., May 2 during a ceremony at the Pentagon.

“The Commander in Chief’s Award is the highest honor a military installation can receive,” Frank Kendall, acting undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology, and logistics, said according to prepared remarks. “Today’s award winners are helping transform our facilities and infrastructure to better meet current and future challenges.”

He said the criteria established for the Commander in Chief’s Award reflect the broad scope of installation responsibilities. Installations must support military missions, provide a high quality of life, ensure the health and safety of service members and their families, collaborate with surrounding communities, exercise sound business and communication practices, and demonstrate responsible environmental and energy stewardship.

“DLA Distribution San Joaquin serves as DoD’s Western Strategic Distribution Platform, coordinating global materiel distribution and other logistics activities in support of U.S. forces worldwide,” Kendall said. “They supported Operation Tomodachi following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan by sending emergency shipments of humanitarian aid.”

Kendall acknowledged that DLA Distribution San Joaquin also has a proactive safety program resulting in a 15 percent decline in recordable injuries and a 21 percent decline in employee injuries and illnesses that resulted in days away from work, restricted work activity or a job transfer.

“The Occupational Safety and Health Administration designated the depot as a Voluntary Protection Program Star Site based on the installation’s high level of employee involvement in maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, and its proactive implementation of safety best practices, to include employment of a full-time ergonomics specialist,” he said.

Marine Col. Adrian Burke, DLA Distribution San Joaquin commander, accepted the award and thanked the gathered leaders and attendees.

The service winners of this year’s award were: U.S. Army Garrison Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield, Hinesville, Ga.; Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla.; and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Tucson, Ariz.

“Each of these installations have led by example and set standards that define a vision for installation excellence,” Kendall said. “They embody courage, integrity, and initiative as they strengthen our military and support our warfighters and their families.”
