    352nd Civil Affairs Command

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A civil affairs officer from Birmingham, Ala., took the reins of the 360th Civil Affairs Brigade (Airborne) at a change of command ceremony, May 20, at the South Carolina State House in Columbia, S.C.

Col. Woodard Nunis accepted the unit’s colors from Col. Jeffrey Coggin and said the unit he took over has a reputation for quality training and an operational tempo that precedes it.

“First off I’d like to thank General Burley for the opportunity to command the unit. It’s an outstanding civil affairs unit; your reputation is across the Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command,” said Nunis, thanking Brig. Gen. Ed Burley, commander of the 352nd Civil Affairs Command (Airborne) during his remarks.

Nunis comes to the 360th CA Bde. from the 350th CACOM, where he served as the operations officer. He previously commanded the 492nd Civil Affairs Battalion, and he was deployed to Iraq with the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion in April 2003.

“Being a brigade commander is a big step,” he said. “Your subordinate commanders are not in the same building like the battalion level. I’m looking forward to this opportunity.”

Nunis said he is also looking forward to the new direction given by U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command Commander Maj. Gen. Jeff Jacobs.

During his remarks, Burley said both Nunis and Coggin share a history of command and success in leading soldiers.

Coggin, who took over the 360th in November 2011, returns to the 352nd CACOM, where he will take over one of its functional specialty teams.

Coggin said that any chance to lead soldiers is a good one.

“It was a great experience,” he said. “Every day was a new challenge, but I was surrounded by highly motivated soldiers. We just took each day at a time and took a step back to do whatever it would take to get the job done.”
