Afghan security forces and ISAF forces arrest 28 insurgents during the joint operation "Zafar 2"

HERAT, Afghanistan – Zafar 2, the joint operation between Afghan security forces and ISAF forces is coming to its end in Farah province. It was focused in Khak-e-Safayd district, from the May 3 to the May 12. Farah province is in the south area of responsibility of the Regional Command West, led by the "Garibaldi Brigade."

The operation was conducted by Afghan National Security Forces, assisted by the Task Force South, based Cavalry Regiment "guide" (19 °), comprised of about 550 men. The activities have been based on counterterrorism, enforcing the sovereignty of the Afghan government, making possible the set up of two new police stations and allowing reconstruction to the local population.

The operation "Zafar 2", which led to the arrest of 28 insurgents, is part of the operations that the RC-West Command plans and coordinates with Afghan security forces, a combination of efforts that, at this stage of the transition, allowed the hand over of the responsibility for security to Afghan forces in most of the districts in which it is divided the area under the Italian leadership, and that includes the four provinces of Herat, Farah, Badghis and Gohr.

Last updates say that the results of the operation were as follows: one ANP and one ALP were injured during the operation. ANP arrested two insurgents by the name of Mullah Qafar (son of Mohammad Azam) and Mullah Ahmad (son of Mohammad Afzad) were arrested with one AK-47, one machine gun with 100 rounds were found in Kocha Bacha Baran and given to the ANP, ANSF achievements included the confiscation of three AK-47s, 17 motorcycles, three magazines, two grenades, four RPG rounds and two explosives. They burned seven motorcycles. The National Directorate of Security achievements included the arrest of Mullah Anwar, son of Mullah Ibrahim, with one AK-47; Mullah Surajudim with one AK-47; Mullah Esmatullah; Mullah Akhtar; Mulhem; Khairudin; Abdul Malik; Mullah Obaidullah with on AK-47 were arrested in the Bibicha Baran Mountains, and NDS searches resulted in the confiscation of one AK-47, one mortar, one IED, one RPG round, and one grenade. Six insurgents were killed and five insurgents were injured in the operation.
