AGADIR, Morocco – The deputy commander for Marine Forces Europe and Africa conducted various site visits during a tour of the area of operations for Exercise African Lion 2012, April 13.

Brig. Gen. Charles Chiarotti arrived on deck and observed Peace Support Operations training with the 14th Marine Regiment, out of Fort Worth, Texas, in Tifnit, Morocco, and Humanitarian Civil Assistance conducted by the Utah National Guard in Sidi Moussa, Morocco.

“I keep saying it, great exercise,” said Chiarotti. “Great work by Moroccan Royal Armed Forces and the Joint Task Force as a whole. Now we just have to bring everyone home safe.”

During both exercises, the Marines and guardsmen worked hand-in-hand with their Royal Moroccan Military counterparts sharing tactics, techniques and procedures.

Chiarotti surveyed demonstrations for riot control, and was able to recognize two Marines and two Moroccan soldiers as stand-outs during the training for their leadership, skills and expertise.

The training was designed to increase familiarity between the two countries and strengthen their ability to respond to crisis as well as promote stability.

While at the civic assistance site, Chiarotti toured a school transformed into a medical clinic where he was able to meet and speak with guardsmen providing medical care in conjunction with Moroccan military medical personnel.

The humanitarian assistance projects enable Moroccans living in small villages to combat disease. The main goal is for the two militaries' medical staffs is to improve lives and relieve human suffering.

While getting a feel for the operations conducted in the ground currently, Chiarotti is already looking forward to next year’s African Lion discussing the potential of expanding the field training exercises with the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System and other assets to continue to enhance the mutual understanding built between the countries’ militaries and further strengthen the partnership.
