SAN JOAQUIN, Calif. - Defense Logistics Agency Distribution San Joaquin, Calif., provides pre-assembled kits of equipment to the armed forces and the Coast Guard.
The kits, which include equipment for everything from weapons and vehicle maintenance to tents, have been assembled in San Joaquin for more than 25 years as a collaborative effort between the military services, DLA Aviation and DLA Distribution, said Stan Harrison, DLA Distribution San Joaquin, Calif., Program Support Office chief.
When a customer decides a new type of kit is needed for a mission, he or she can contact a representative at DLA Aviation or DLA Land and Maritime to request that new kit, Harrison said. Those requests are forwarded to inventory control points, where the kit is assembled and assigned a national stock number. Following a kit’s initial assembly, the ICP coordinates with DLA Distribution for authorization. The kitting team at DLA Distribution San Joaquin builds kits following their authorization and the completed product is introduced into mission stock.
Fully assembled kits can be composed of anywhere from three to more than 100 different types of items, Harrison said. The variety of kits and the number of them being put together keep the team busy.
“At any time you can have anywhere from 50 to 60 kits being assembled and the environment is extremely busy,” Harrison said.
The kitting team recently assembled more than 660 tent kits for the military services. One of these kits contains seven different types of items and includes an expandable frame, an end-section frame, a tent, a 16-inch wooden pin, a 9-inch aluminum pin, 12-inch steel pins, and a tent liner. All of those pieces are assembled and put into a cover to prepare them for shipment to customers around the globe.
Joe Chavez, Ozone Depleting Substance work leader and kitting team member, said he takes pride in the kitting mission at San Joaquin. A veteran, he said he used similar kits while he was in uniform.
“[In the] military, I can remember similar tents being put together and used in the field,” Chavez said. “It’s been excellent to see how our kit projects affect our military customers worldwide and we are proud to be able to support them here at San Joaquin.”
