JOINT EXPEDITIONARY BASE LITTLE CREEK-FORT STORY, Va. - Longtime Richmond Heights resident Lorenzo Vargas was promoted to the rank of corporal in the United States Marine Corps, during a ceremony with fellow Marines aboard Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek – Fort Story, Va., March 1.
Vargas, who is of Puerto Rican descent, received his high school diploma from Miami Killian High School in 2008. He is currently serving as a warehouse clerk at Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group in Virginia Beach, Va.
Since enlisting in September 2008, Vargas has been accountable for the maintenance of more than $120,000 worth of gear and equipment that was issued to Marine deploying in support of various operations throughout the globe.
Prior to arriving at MCSCG, Vargas served overseas with Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division at Camp Schwab in Okinawa, Japan, from December 2009 until December 2011.
Vargas lives in the Virginia Beach area of Virginia.
His father Wilfredo Vargas and mother Vicki Peart still reside in the Miami area.
Marine Corps Security Cooperation Group is a unit in the Marine Corps that coordinates, manages, executes, and evaluates United States Marine Corps Security Cooperation programs and activities, to include assessment, planning, related military education and training, and adviser support to ensure unity of effort in building Partner Nation Security Forces capacity and capability in order to facilitate USMC and regional Marine Forces component support to combatant commanders security cooperation objectives.
