Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Sigonella
BLACK SEA – The USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) held a change of command ceremony on the flight deck in front of officers and crew, prior to pulling into port in Burgas, Bulgaria, Oct. 25.
During the ceremony, Capt. Herbert Hadley was relieved by Capt. Stephen Shinego.
“It is very likely that this will be my final sea tour,” said Hadley. “Honestly, I couldn’t think of any ship or crew I would have rather spent it with. I would like to thank each and every one of you for the unwavering support you have given me over and over during my time aboard.”
Hadley affirmed his full confidence in the new commanding officer and shared a personal goodbye with his shipmates.
“I love each and every one of you, not only because it is my duty by God, but also because of what each of you do every day for your country,” said Hadley.
Shinego’s remarks began with a reflection on his first experience aboard Philippine Sea, as a young junior officer only planning to spend four years on active duty.
“I checked aboard the Philippine Sea as a commissioning member and the First Lieutenant. I only had plans of doing four years, but it was the chiefs and officers that guided me through those first few years and the mentoring that made me continue to stay,” said Shinego.
Following the reading of his orders, Shinego assumed command and shared these closing remarks about Hadley.
“Capt. Hadley has been a great friend and a great help to me and my wife on our transition to Jacksonville,” said Shinego. “He has made this an expeditious turnover by continuing to answer every question I have sent his way, and by continuing the lines of communication during my preparation to take command.”
“I look forward to my command here. Most of all I look forward to getting to know each and everyone of you,” said Shinego.
