PARWAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – A Portage native is now serving as a detention facility security guard force member for Task Group Trident, a subordinate Combined Joint Interagency Task Force 435 command at Camp Sabalu-Harrison here.

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Candela is deployed from the Expeditionary Combat Readiness Center in San Diego and arrived in Afghanistan in December 2010 on a nine-month tour.

“I provide security for the Detention Facility in Parwan and ensure only authorized personnel have access to the compound,” said Candela.

The sailor said he contributes to the overall safety and security of the compound and the DFIP.

“I ensure the safety of the many soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, local nationals and U.S. contractors so they can perform their various duties,” said Candela.

The Portage native said he has enjoyed working with various groups since he arrived.

“I have accomplished establishing good working rapport with local nationals and U.S. contractors,” said Candela.

Candela, the son of Vincent Candela from Kalamazoo, joined the U.S. Navy in October 2003, and previously served on a 6-month cruise to Africa.

Task Group Trident sailors compose the guard force at the Detention Facility in Parwan. Task Group Trident sailors also serve as instructors at the Detention Operations Transition Course, preparing Afghan National Army military police soldiers for duty in the DFIP.

The DFIP, a state-of-the-art theater internment facility, located several kilometers from Bagram Air Field, was completed in September 2009 and occupied by detainees in late December 2009. The DFIP is equipped with a medical facility, on-site family visitation center, vocational facilities and educational classrooms. The design of the DFIP accommodates detainee reintegration efforts and enables CJIATF-435 to better align detainee operations with the overall strategy to defeat the extremist insurgency in Afghanistan.

CJIATF-435, in partnership with the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and U.S. interagency and international partners, conducts operations in detention, corrections, the judicial sector and biometrics. CJIATF-435 is conducting a conditions-based transition of detention operations to Afghan control while promoting Rule of Law.
