KABUL, Afghanistan – The Ministry of Interior and its NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan partners are hoping to ingrain sports and fitness into the Afghan policing community to build leadership, character, discipline and teamwork.
Challenges with recruitment, behavior of police and a lack of public confidence are enduring problems for the Afghan National Police. Officials are hoping to promote a positive image of the Afghan police while creating opportunities for police community engagements through sports programs.
One of the first locations, taking advantage of this initiative is the Shamshad 202nd Zone Police Corps Headquarters in Kabul.
At the gym, which opened April 12, policemen and women will be able to take advantage of sports training and equipment. In addition, they will have instructors from local sports clubs and the opportunity to conduct joint training with community members.
With more than 40 federations each representing a different sport, there are thousands of sports clubs throughout Afghanistan. Federation heads believe that sports teach discipline, teamwork, good sportsmanship and respect for others. Police leaders hope to integrate these values into the police through sports in addition to other self-improvement programs.
