    NATO Training Mission Afghanistan

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – The Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team and Canadian Civilian Police contingent turned over oversight of the Afghan National Police training center at Camp Nathan Smith to Brig. Gen. Zarefi, commander of ANP Training Command South, and to NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan on March 29.

“This is a great occasion in partnership with Canada to change command of this Training Center to the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. To rebuild Afghanistan, we must focus on education. It’s important that we have brought our ANP brothers and sisters together at this training center,” Governor Wesa, governor of Kandahar.

Ceremony attendees included Kandahar Goveror Wesa, Brig. Gen Zarefi; Brig. Gen Kohdamani, Deputy Commander Afghanistan Training General Command; Maj. Gen Stuart Beare, NTM-A Deputy Commander for Police; Tim Martin, KPRT; Jess Dutton, deputy chief of mission, Canadian Embassy; and five District Chiefs of Police.

“Today every police recruit is formally trained. The training of officers will be the enduring capability of the Police Training Center at Camp Nathan Smith,” explained Beare.

Accredited by the Afghanistan Ministry of Interior in 2009, the ANP training center offers specialized training for 70 students at the live-in site. The courses available to the students are Leadership Management, Criminal Investigation, Emergency Response First Aid, and Security Awareness for female ANP members. The training center also offers the only officer training course outside of Kabul.

“It is not the uniforms that make the police, but a well-trained patrolman. I can put a uniform on a tree and that doesn’t make it the police,” said Zarefi, who is now in charge of seven police training centers throughout the southern region of Afghanistan. “I will do my best to make sure the training centers keep training policeman the best.”
