JOINT BASE BALAD, Iraq – A cloud of steam jets upwards as a server removes the pan, fogging up the glass partition and obscuring the food. Left to the imagination of the airman was a color card that read, "Peak Performance."

Seven days a week, the dining facility cooks whip up a variety of delicacies to appease the taste buds of members at JBB. From ribs to boiled chicken breast, colored cards are strategically placed out front to help many make the right choice.

As each branch of service continues to reshape physical training requirements, proper nutrition is ever more important for a ‘fit to fight’ force.

According to Staff Sgt. John Seay, 332nd Expeditionary Medical Support Squadron, diet therapy craftsman deployed from Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, nutrition is the key to weight lost.

“First, control your nutrition,” Seay, a native of Killeen, Texas, and a nationally-certified personal trainer said. “Second, have a plan of action. Meet with a credible source who can write a nutrition plan, workout routine and help you set goals.”

Seay, who is an optimal performance nutrition trainer through the Cooper’s Institute for Aerobic Research, Dallas, also said to change up your routine every four to six weeks to challenge oneself and create muscle confusion.

“There is not one type or certain type of routine that is better for weight loss or is proven to be the ‘Gold Standard’ routine,” he said. “The key when it comes to weight loss during a workout routine is to not plateau or ‘hit a wall’ as some would say.”

When a workout becomes boring or the routines are too easy and monotonous, may be signs of the plateau state, the sergeant said.

A personal trainer of seven years and having taught nutrition and developed food plans for ten years, Seay said the biggest reason why people are unsuccessful at losing weight is because they want instant results to feed their "instant gratification mindset."

“You didn’t put on 30 pounds in two weeks, so how can it be lost in the same amount of time?” he said. “Focus on small attainable goals and it will lead to your desired weight.”

    LOW CARB/ FAD DIETS

To the sergeant, fad diets are generally something that is temporary or short-lived and either has limited follow through, which ends up costing a lot of money or can hurt an Airman’s performance.

“It amazes me on how fixated people are about low carb diets,” Seay said.

Carbohydrate is an energy source that helps power the body and digests food. There are two main types of carbohydrates, simple and complex.

Simple carbs are found in some natural foods, sodas and table sugar. After consumption, it is absorbed directly into the blood as glucose, which provides the body energy.

Complex carbs in vegetables, legumes and pasta product are a combination of different sugars which takes longer for the body to breakdown. The slow absorption supplies the body with a steady stream of energy, which limits the amount of sugar converted into fat and stored. Seay recommends choosing carbohydrates wisely as they are a main fuel source.

“When working out without carbs you are running on fumes,” he said. “Some may experience feeling tired, light headed or headaches because of the limited carbohydrate intake.”

So on the next meal, look at the color cards to help focus on a regiment that can give you the balanced nutrients needed to optimize healthy weight loss and to fuel you throughout your workout routines.
