Tikrit, Iraq (May 24, 2006) " Airmen from Montana's Air National Guard stationed in Iraq were visited by their governor on Thursday as they brought their six month rotation to a close.
Gov. Brain Schweitzer took a guided tour of the 557th Expeditionary, Red Horse Squadron's constructions projects currently underway for the 101st Airborne Division at Contingency Operating Base Speicher.
The 557th Red Horse, which stands for Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operations Repair Squadron Engineers, is a heavy construction unit made up of about 90 percent Air National Guard and 10 percent active duty Air Force.
The energetic governor took the time to see what the Montana Airmen were working on by touring several sights including the new housing units, the Red Horse Tactical Command Center, four different work areas and the motor pool. He also took the time to experience what the job is like for the Airmen by operating a Bobcat (engineer vehicle).
After the tour he got to interact with the troops by playing a game of horse shoes and dining with them in one of the bases dining halls. The governor, known for the bolo ties he wears, gave some of the ties as mementos to many of the Airmen.
"I was impressed by the sincere interest the governor had for our work," said Air Force Tech. Sgt. Doug Huen, a Montana native in charge of giving the governor a good part of his tour. "He took the time to get our family's information and promised to call each and every one. That in its self means a lot."
