    Story by Capt. Jennifer Bocanegra

    3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne)

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – On Feb. 11, the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) hosted a Change of Responsibility Ceremony for the group's Command Sergeant Major.

On Friday morning, command teams from the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, the U.S. Army Special Forces Command and soldiers from the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) witnessed Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffery Wright relinquish his responsibilities as the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) Command Sergeant Major to Command Sgt. Maj. Patrick Meffert in a ceremony, at the John F. Kennedy Auditorium.

Wright took on the responsibility of the 3rd SFG (A) Group Command Sergeant Major in September 2009. He served with command teams both in garrison and in combat as the Command Sergeant Major for the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Afghanistan. He will move on to take the position of Command Sergeant Major for the Special Operations Command, Africa.

During his final remarks to the group, Wright said, “I will tell you that after my 18 months as the 3rd Special Forces Group’s Command Sergeant Major, my first two priorities never changed. Priority number one is managing our people, our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and civilians that made up the group and the CJSOTF-A. Our soldiers are the reason we are here, it is our Soldiers and their Families that we serve.”

The 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) Commander, Col. Mark Schwartz presided over the ceremony. In his remarks, he stated how impressed he was with Wright’s ability to personally interact with soldiers, subordinates, and leaders at all levels.

“I’ve had the privilege of working with and having as my assigned friends some exceptional command sergeants majors throughout my career, many of them who are sitting in this room today. I can tell you that none of them possess the energy, the intellect, and the leadership that I saw in Jeff during his time here and my short time serving with him as the command team for the 3rd Special Forces Group,” Schwartz said.

Schwartz also welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Patrick Meffert and his wife Mary to the Command Team. Meffert, who spent 17 years in the 3rd SFG (A), is the twelfth Group Command Sergeant Major since the group’s reactivation in 1990. He had been serving as the Deputy Command Sergeant Major for the Group and took over the position of CJSOTF-A Command Sergeant Major this past January.
