CAMP ATTERBURY JOINT MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ind. — The United Service Organization at Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center, Ind. received a donation, Jan. 25, from family members in honor of the late retired Lt. Col. Herbert H. C. Zumhingst, a native of Seymour, Ind.
Dorothy Zumhingst and Diane Scott, Lt. Col. Zumhingst’s wife and daughter respectively, presented the $1,500 donation to Duane Straw, president and CEO of the Indiana USO, and Doug Warnecke, executive director of the Indiana USO.
Lt. Col. Zumhingst served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam as an aviator flying bombers, transport and gunships during these conflicts. He retired after more than 40 years of service as a lieutenant colonel at Bakalar Air Force Base, Columbus, Ind. In addition to these major conflicts, Lt. Col Zumhingst was ordered to active duty during some of the crisis that plagued the Cold War era.
As with troops on deployment today, Lt. Col. Zumhingst spent his off-duty time at the USO, said his wife Dorothy.
“He really enjoyed the USO,” said Zumhingst. “He said it gave them a break to relieve the tension of their duties and why they were where they were.”
In addition to the financial contribution, Zumhingst and Scott also donated several books for the troops.
“We wanted to help and support our troops because we are thankful for what they do for us,” said Scott. “So many people do not realize the sacrifices that military families go through. We feel that most people take it for granted what these military families give-up.”
“This was a very generous donation by the Zumhingst family on behalf of their father and husband, whom served at Bakalar Air Force Base in Columbus,” said Col. Todd Townsend, garrison commander at Camp Atterbury. “It’s amazing to see the linage of support going all the way back to WWII and the families that still want to give to the soldiers here through the USO. It is a very generous act that will be put to great use to support the soldiers at Camp Atterbury.”
